Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia won the 2022 Astana Open in Kazakhstan on Sunday. Seeded fourth, and given a wildcard, Djokovic beat the third seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the final, 6-3, 6-4.

This was Djokovic’s 90th career ATP title, and second tournament win this year. Djokovic’s only other ATP title win came at Wimbledon, where he won Wimbledon for the seventh time after beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the final, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in the final.

This was the third ever Astrana Open, but the first time the event was part of the ATP Tour 500 series. The first two events were part of the ATP Tour 250 series. In 2020, Australia’s John Millman beat Adrian Mannarino of France 7-5, 6-1 in the final. In 2021, Soon-woo Kwon of South Korea beat Australia’s James Duckworth in the final, 7-6, 6-3. This was the only ATP title victory for Millman and Kwon.

There is no doubt that the level of interest among the world’s elite players increased by the fact that the Astrana Open was given ATP Tour 500 series status. The event had five of the top nine players in the world. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, the number one seed, ended up losing in the first round to David Goffin of Belgium, 7-5, 6-3.

The Astrana Open was one of two ATP Tour 500 Series events over the last week. The other was the Japan Open, where in an all-American final, Taylor Fritz beat Frances Tiafoe, 7-6, 7-6.

There are two other ATP 500 series events in 2022. The Swiss Indoors and Vienna Open will take place at the end of October.
