Novak Djokovic to face Carlos Alcaraz in a Wimbledon final rematch

For the second consecutive year, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will face Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the Wimbledon final. After Alcaraz won a five set thriller last year, 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, it was determined on Friday that Alcaraz, the world number three, would play Djokovic, the world number two, in the final of the only grand slam tennis tournament on grass.

Alcaraz, the three-time grand slam champion who also won the 2022 United States Open, and 2024 French Open, defeated the fifth seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the 2021 United States Open champion, in the first of two semifinals on Friday, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Alcaraz had two double faults compared to six for Medvedev. Alcaraz also had an impressive 15 break point opportunities where he broke Medvedev six times.

Djokovic, meanwhile, beat the 25th seed, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. In the second set tiebreak, Djokovic won 7-2. Like Alcaraz, Djokovic had a lot of break point opportunities. He had 13 compared to only four for Musetti.

Djokovic has played Alcaraz on four other occasions in the past. Alcaraz won 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 in the semifinals of Madrid in 2022, in their first head-to-head meeting. Djokovic then beat Alcaraz 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open. What we remember most of this battle was the fact that Alcaraz was dealing with severe cramping.

Djokovic has won the last two meetings, with both matches on hard court. Djokovic beat Alcaraz 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 in the final of Cincinnati in 2023. Djokovic then beat Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the 2023 ATP Finals.

This will be the first time in 2024 that Djokovic will play Alcaraz. With a win, Djokovic will tie Roger Federer of Switzerland for the most Wimbledon titles ever with eight.
