Alexander Zverev upset Novak Djokovic in the Netto ATP Finals, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic lost to Alexander Zverev in a shock upset for the ATP Championship.

Zverev’s approach to the best player in the world was bold. He served with velocity, hit deep into Djokovic’s court in rally’s, and hit daring winners in tight windows.

It was just Zverev’s day.

The 21-year old became the first German ATP Champion since Boris Becker in 1995. And as the youngest finalist in nine years, Zverev looks likely to be the next generation’s world number 1, and successor to the all-time great he beat yesterday.

Djokovic showed no frustration. He was simply outclassed and didn’t have enough left in the tank, as he admits in the post-match press-conference.

“Health-wise I haven’t been really perfect the last three-four weeks, so that took a lot out of me,” said Djokovic.

“That (finishing world no.1) was the goal coming into the indoor season and I managed to achieve that. So overall, it was a phenomenal season that I have to be very proud of.”

This season has been incredible for Djokovic. Early in the year he bowed out of the Australian Open due to a persistent elbow injury. Many wondered if the Serbian would ever return to his world-champion form.

He came back from that injury and won Wimbledon, the US Open, the Shanghai Masters, and most importantly, he regained the World Number 1 Ranking.

While Djokovic was hoping to cap off a near perfect comeback season, he still has plenty to celebrate.
