There are two Australians in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2022. On the men’s side, Nick Kyrgios of Canberra is in the final eight after a five-set thriller over American Brandon Nakashima on center court on Monday. Meanwhile, Ajla Tomljanovic of Brisbane is in the women’s quarterfinals after a three-set win over Alize Cornet of France in the fourth round on Monday.

Kyrgios defeated Nakashima 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. Kyrgios’s serve was working exceptionally well as he had 35 aces compared to only three double faults. Nakashima meanwhile only had 10 aces in five sets compared to nine double faults.

This was the second notable win for Kyrgios in three days. On Saturday, Kyrgios beat Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, the number four seed and 2021 French Open finalist, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.

Tomljanovic beat Cornet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Cornet had problems with her serve as she had zero aces and seven double faults. Cornet was the second player with a French connection that Tomljanovic has beaten at Wimbledon in the last three days. On Saturday in the third round, Tomljanovic beat 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In the quarterfinals, Kyrgios will next face Cristian Garin of Chile. This will be their first career meeting. Tomljanovic will next face the 17th seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. Rybakina, who has been serving extremely well in the Wimbledon tournament to date, beat Tomljanovic in their only prior meeting, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round of the 2021 Madrid Open.

The other three men’s quarterfinal games have Novak Djokovic of Serbia versus Jannik Sinner of Italy, Christian Norrie of Great Britain versus David Goffin of Belgium and Rafael Nadal of Spain versus Taylor Fritz of the United States. The other three women’s quarterfinals have Simona Halep of Romania versus Amanda Anisimova of the United States, the all-unseeded German matchup of Tatjana Maria versus Julie Niemeier and Ons Jabeur of Tunisia versus Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.
