NFL suspends five players on Thursday

According to Michael DiRocco of ESPN on Thursday, five National Football League players were suspended for either gambling or violating the NFL’s drug policy. The four players suspended for gambling were cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and tight end Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts, defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor, who played last year with the Detroit Lions, and offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans. The player suspended for taking a banned substance was Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Cam Robinson.
Rodgers Sr., Berry and Taylor were suspended a full year for betting on NFL games. Petit-Frere was suspended six games for betting on sports other than football in the workplace. Robinson was suspended four games for taking a performance enhancing drug. Rodgers Sr. and Berry have been waived by the Colts, while Taylor was a free agent and had not signed with a NFL franchise.
Rodgers Sr. had 34 combined tackles (24 solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles), one tackle for a loss, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, and four fumble recoveries for 19 yards. Berry meanwhile has not had a NFL catch. He signed with Indianapolis on January 4, 2023 after being on the Jaguars practice squad in 2022. Taylor played one game for the Lions in 2022, and Petit-Frere had one solo tackle in 16 games.
This is the second wave of suspensions handed out by the NFL in the 2023 offseason for gambling. In April, the NFL suspended Detroit Lions wide receivers Quintez Cephus, Jameson Williams, and Stanley Berryhill, Lions safety C.J. Moore, and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney.
