NFL safety Malcolm Jenkins announces retirement at age 34

National Football League safety Malcolm Jenkins of East Orange, New Jersey announced his retirement at age 34 on Wednesday according to Kevin Patra of nfl.com. Jenkins spent seven seasons with the New Orleans Saints (2009 to 2013 and 2020 to 2021), and again with the Philadelphia Eagles (2014 to 2019).

In 199 NFL games, Jenkins had 1044 combined tackles (804 solo tackles and 240 assisted tackles), 51 tackles for a loss, 35 quarterback hits, 21 interceptions for 590 yards and seven pick sixes, 110 pass deflections, 20 forced fumbles, 13.5 sacks. 11 fumble recoveries for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Jenkins had his fumble recovery for a touchdown in a 45-16 Saints win over the Atlanta Falcons on December 26, 2011. It was for 30 yards and put the Saints up 38-16 at the time.

In 2016, Jenkins was one of four NFL players to lead the league with two interception returns for a touchdown. Jenkins was joined by Eric Berry of the Kansas City Chiefs, Deion Jones of the Falcons and Bradley Roby of the Denver Broncos.

Jenkins was also a two-time Super Bowl champion. He was victorious with the Saints in 2010, and with the Eagles in 2018.

Jenkins was also selected to the Pro Bowl thrice in 2015, 2017, and 2018. Prior to the NFL, Jenkins played at Ohio State. While at the NCAA level, Jenkins won the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented to the best defensive back in college football on an annual basis. He was the Saints’s first round pick, 14th overall, in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Jenkins is one of two NFL safeties that made headlines on Wednesday. Former Washington safety Todd Bowles was named the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
