NFL offensive lineman Brandon Scherff retires at age 33

According to Will Backus of CBS Sports on Thursday, offensive lineman Brandon Scherff of Denison, Iowa has retired from professional football at the age of 33. Scherff played 10 National Football League seasons. He was with the Washington Commanders for seven seasons from 2015 to 2021, and the last three seasons from 2022 to 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In 140 games, Scherff had one solo tackle. It came in a 27-21 Washington win over the Carolina Panthers on November 21, 2021.

For five seasons while with Washington, Scherff was selected to the Pro Bowl. He was honoured in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2020, Scherff was selected as a first team All Pro Guard by the Associated Press.

On March 17, 2022, the Jaguars signed Scherff to a massive three-year contract worth $49.5 million. Scherff was set to earn $16.5 million per season. At the time, he was one of four players the Jaguars signed to a contract of $10 million or more. The other three were middle linebacker Foyesade Oulokun (three years, $45 million), defensive tackle Florunso Fatukasi of Far Rockaway, New York (three years, $30 million), and cornerback Darious Williams of Jacksonville, Florida (three years, $30 million).

Scherff was initially the first round pick, fifth overall, in the 2015 NFL Draft out of the University of Iowa. He was selected behind quarterbacks Jameis Winston of Bessemer, Alabama (first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Florida State) and Marcus Mariota of Honolulu, Hawaii (second overall by the Tennessee Titans out of Oregon), outside linebacker Dante Fowler of St. Petersburg, Florida (third overall by the Jaguars out of Florida), and wide receiver Amari Cooper of Miami, Florida (fourth overall by the Oakland Raiders out of Alabama).
