NFL Fantasy Preview: Washington Football Team

In a 32-part series leading up to the start of the 2021 National Football League season, we will take a look at each NFL franchise from a fantasy perspective. The 32nd team we will review is the Washington Football Team.

Out of the 32 National Football League teams last season you could make the argument that the Washington Football Team (the team still without a name) made the most significant strides. Even though they had a record of seven wins and nine losses, it was good enough to win the NFC East under new head coach Ron Rivera.

The one area where Washington made the biggest strides was team defense. In 2021, they gave up 329 points. That was 106 fewer points than the 435 points they surrendered in 2020.

The leader of the Washington D is Jon Bostic of Wellington, Florida. Bostic had a career-best season in 2020, in his second season in Washington after two seasons with the Chicago Bears, and one season each with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers. He had career-highs in combined tackles (118), solo tackles (61), assisted tackles (57), and sacks (three). When it comes to fantasy, Washington was tied with Indianapolis for the fifth most fantasy points with 191.

At tight end, Logan Thomas is currently ranked eighth. Last season in his first season with Washington, he had 72 catches for 670 yards, and six touchdowns.

Now Thomas will be trying too build chemistry with new quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who Washington acquired from the Miami Dolphins in the offseason. Fitzpatrick is currently 27th in fantasy rankings. Last year he completed 183 passes in 267 attempts for 2091 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. However, Fitzpatrick’s numbers would have been higher if he played a full season. That is because he lost his starting quarterback job to Tua Tagovailoa.

At wide receiver, Terry McLaurin made significant strides in 2020, and is ranked 24th among wide receivers. He is now Washington’s number one wideout, after 87 catches for 1118 yards and four touchdowns last season. Meanwhile, Curtis Samuel, who is the twin brother of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, is 32nd among wide receivers. Last season, he had 77 catches for 851 yards and three touchdowns.

Finally, at running back, Antonio Gibson is Washington’s lead back. Currently 14th in my fantasy rankings at running back, Gibson had an excellent rookie season after being drafted in the third round, 66th overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft out of the University of Memphis. He had 170 rushes for 795 yards and 11 touchdowns, along with 36 catches for 247 yards.
