Newcastle tells on-strike Isak he ‘must stay’ after rogue social post

Newcastle United has told Alexander Isak they won’t be letting him leave before the end of his contract, especially after his inflammatory social media post where he accused the club of “breaking promises” this transfer window.
Isak has been antagonising for a move to Liverpool since the 2024/25 season wrapped up, going as far as refusing to play for Newcastle at the start of the new Premier League campaign.

While many expected the Swiss striker to eventually get his wish, Newcastle has instead held strong – and now club insider Craig Hope has reported that Novocastrian club hierarchy “believe they have now been left with no choice but to stand firm” rather than bow to Isak’s publicly shared demands. (The post was uploaded on his Instagram story.)
“We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Isak this evening,” the Tyneside club wrote.
“We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle this summer. We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes, and we listen to their views.
“As explained to Alex, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle, the team, and our supporters in all decisions, and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired.
“We do not foresee those conditions being met,” the club added in its Tuesday release.
“Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he’s ready to rejoin his teammates.”
Whether Isak sees it the same way remains to be seen; reports suggest Isak and his camp have been furious for some weeks now, starting when new Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell told them he would not be getting a new contract.
That came as a shock to the Swedish star because previous co-owner Amanda Staveley had said he would.

There have also been suggestions for some time that Isak deserves more than the £6,240,000 he’s getting a year right now.
He was also under the impression that a replacement wasn’t needed for him to leave for a fee.
“The reality is that promises were made, and the club has known my position for a long time,” the 25-year-old wrote on Instagram earlier this week. “To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” he continued.
“That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors… When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
For the time being, Isak still remains signed to play for Newcastle through to 2028.
