Nelly Korda to miss first major of 2022 with a blood clot in the arm

Nelly Korda, the world number two from Bradenton, Florida will miss the first LPGA major of the year, the 2022 Chevron Championship at Rancho Mirage, California, with a blood clot in her arm, according to Tod Leonard of golfdigest.com. Korda has not played on the LPGA Tour since finishing in fourth place at the LPGA Drive On Championship at the Crown Colony Golf and Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida in February. There, Korda finished in fourth place in an event won by Leona Maguire of Ireland.

Korda is coming off a magical 2021 LPGA season where she won the Women’s PGA Championship and the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. However, she only finished the year ranked number two in the world, behind Jin-young Ko of South Korea. Ko passed Korda at the end of the 2021 LPGA season when she won the CME Group Tour Championship.

If you have not heard of the Chevron Championship, you are not the only one. Chevron has taken over from ANA Airlines as the tournament’s title sponsor, and this will be the final season that the first major of the year in women’s golf will take place in Rancho Mirage. It had been held in the beautiful Palm Springs region in southern California since the tournament was first a major in 1983.

The Chevron Championship will start on March 31. Rumours are swirling that the tournament will move to the Texas region starting in 2023. That its a little surprising when you consider the fact that the Chevron headquarters are based in San Francisco.
