Nationals trade Jose Ferrer to the Mariners

There was a trade made between the Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals on Saturday according to Daniel Kramer of mlb.com. The Nationals have traded relief pitcher Jose Ferrer of Maimon, Dominican Republic to the Mariners for prospects Harry Ford and Isaac Lyon. Ford is a catcher and Lyon is a pitcher.

Ferrer has played the last three seasons with the Nationals. In 2025, Ferrer pitched 72 games and had a record of four wins and four losses with an earned run average of 4.48. During 76 1/3 innings pitched, Ferrer had 11 saves, 21 holds, and 71 strikeouts, and gave up 81 hits, 38 earned runs, five home runs and 16 walks, to go along with a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.27.

The Mariners are coming off a superb season where they reached the American League Championship Series. They reached the seventh game of the series before losing to the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 2025, Ferrer emerged as the Nationals closer after the trade deadline. Washington had traded their original closer Kyle Finnegan of Detroit, Michigan to the Detroit Tigers on July 31. The decision to make Ferrer the closer was an interesting one. That is because Ferrer only had an earned run average of 4.78 at the time.

It should be noted that Ferrer has had some arm trouble in the past. During the 2024 MLB season, Ferrer only played 31 games because of a strained muscle in his right shoulder. As a result, he went on the 60 day injury list.

The Nationals were the second worst team in the National League in 2025. The only team worse were the Colorado Rockies.
