My greatest memory of Stacy Lewis

According to The Golf Channel on Wednesday, American golfer Stacy Lewis is planning on retiring from the LPGA Tour at the end of the calendar year at the age of 40. The native of Toledo, Ohio won two women’s golf majors in her career. The first came at the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship and the second came at the 2013 Women’s British Open.

In all, Lewis won 13 LPGA events. Of her 13 titles she won the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Atlantic City, New Jersey twice. The first time came in 2012 and the second time came in 2014. When Lewis won the 2014 ShopRite LPGA Classic, she defeated American Christina Kim by six strokes. It was her second win in a month by six strokes. In May of 2014, Lewis won the North Texas LPGA Shootout by beating Meena Lee of South Korea in Dallas. In Lewis’s victories in New Jersey and Dallas 12 years ago, she posted a score of -16 each time.

As mentioned, Lewis won two LPGA majors. At the major win in Rancho Mirage, California 14 years ago, Lewis posted a winning score of -13.  She defeated Yani Tseng of Taiwan by three strokes. It was the celebration that was the most memorable. As custom the champion dove into Poppy’s Pond. In this instance, Stacy’s mother Carol dove into the pond with Stacy. Unfortunately, the jumps did not go according to plan. That is because Carol broke her leg! Then when Lewis won the British Women’s Open at St. Andrews two years later, she posted a winning score of -8 and beat South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi and Hee Young Park by two strokes each.

Lewis’s last win came at the 2020 Ladies Scottish Open. She had a winning score of -5 and beat fellow American Cheyenne Knight, Spain’s Azahara Munoz and Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen in a playoff. It was Lewis’s only playoff victory on the LPGA Tour.

It is safe to think that age 40 Lewis is probably permanently retiring from women’s golf. A year ago, Lexi Thompson announced her retirement at age 29. However, she changed her mind and played a limited schedule in 2025.
