One of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history, Tom Seaver of Calistoga, California, passed away on Monday at at the age of 75 due to dementia and coronavirus, according to TMZ. Seaver pitched 20 years in the Majors with the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox from 1967 to 1986.

A 12-time all-star, Seaver won three Cy Young Awards with the Mets in 1969, 1973, and 1975. He was also the National League rookie of the year in 1967. Seaver had an overall record of 311 wins and 205 losses with an earned run average of 2.86, and 3640 strikeouts. He is in fact sixth all-time in strikeouts, and is only behind Nolan Ryan (5714), Randy Johnson (4875), Roger Clemens (4672), Steve Carlton (4136), and Bert Blyleven (3701).

Twice Seaver led the Major Leagues in wins. The first time came in 1969 with the Mets as he had 25 wins, and the second time with the Reds as he had 14 wins during the abbreviated 1981 season. Seaver also had the best earned run average in all of baseball (1.76) in 1971.

In 1969, Seaver was on the Mets team that won the World Series. New York defeated Baltimore in five games. In 1992, Seaver was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, as he got 98.84% of the votes.
