Mixed team golf added to the 2028 Olympic Games

According to the Canadian Press on Wednesday, mixed team golf has been added to the Olympic program. The new event will take place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, there were 13 mixed team events. They were the mixed 4×100 metre medley relay in swimming, mixed team archery, the mixed marathon walk relay, the 4×400 metre mixed relay in athletics, mixed doubles badminton, mixed team judo, mixed 470 sailing, mixed Nacra 17 in sailing, mixed 10 metre air rifle shooting, mixed 10 metre air pistol shooting, mixed skeet shotgun shooting, mixed doubles table tennis, and mixed doubles tennis.

Also at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, there are five other mixed events. They are the 4×100 metre mixed relay in athletics, mixed beach sprint double sculls rowing, mixed team compound archery, mixed gender gymnastics, and mixed team table tennis. Meanwhile, the mixed marathon walk relay has been dropped from the Olympic program.

When discussing the mixed gender events at the Olympic Games one cannot ignore equestrian. In this sport, athletes from both genders have been competing against each other on an even playing field.

The mixed golf team event will only take place over two days and be 36 holes. The first day will be alternate shot, and the second day will be best ball. Players participating in the mixed golf team event will have already participated in the individual golf competitions.

Over the last two years, there has been a mixed gender golf event in December in Naples, Florida. It has been known as the Grant Thornton Invitational. Golfers from the PGA and LPGA participate.
