Mikael Ymer receives lengthy suspension for missing three drug tests

According to Richard Pagliaro of Tennis Now on Tuesday, Mikael Ymer of Skara, Sweden has been suspended a year and a half by the International Tennis Federation for missing three doping tests. The missed tests occurred in April, August and November of 2021.

Ymer has denied using a banned substance. However, the fact that he missed these mandatory drug tests does not put him in a positive light. Currently ranked 51st in the world, Ymer will see a significant drop in his world rankings, if he is unable to play high level tennis.

So far in 2023, Ymer has a record of 11 wins and 15 losses. His most notable wins came in the first round of Lyon and the second round of Wimbledon. At Lyon on May 22, Ymer defeated three-time grand slam semifinalist Richard Gasquet of France 6-3, 7-5 in a tune up for the French Open. Gasquet reached the final four of the 2007 and 2015 Wimbledon, and the semifinals of the 2013 United States Open. At Wimbledon on July 6, Ymer beat world number nine Taylor Fritz of the United States 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Ymer was one of two players who delivered an impressive second round upset at Wimbledon. He was joined by Liam Broady of Great Britain, who knocked out world number four Casper Ruud of Norway, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

This is the second time this year Ymer has been disciplined. During Ymer’s second round match in Lyon against Arthur Fils of France, he was disqualified for smashing his racquet against the umpire’s chair. 

Ymer is 24 years of age. He has not won a singles tournament, but has won a doubles tournament on the ATP Tour. That came at the 2016 Stockholm Open with his brother Elias.
