According to the Associated Press on Monday, NBA legend Michael Jordan has made a significant financial contribution to the American medical community. He is reportedly donating $10 million to the North Carolina Regional Health Care system so two medical clinics will be able to open. One will be in New Hanover County, and the other on the southeastern coast of the state.
North Carolina has been decimated by coronavirus over the last year. There have been 826,340 cases, along with 10,562 deaths. In the state, there are still 50,322 active cases.
Jordan has significant links to the state of North Carolina. Even though he was born in Brooklyn, New York, Jordan moved with his family to Wilmington, North Carolina at the age of five. He grew up in Wilmington and attended Emsley A. Laney High School. For university, Jordan remained in North Carolina and starred at the University of North Carolina, where he won a college basketball national championship in 1982 and was the national college player of the year in 1984. Jordan has since had his number 23 retired by the Tar Heels.

This is not the first time Jordan has been recognized for his outstanding humanitarianism. The former superstar for the Chicago Bulls donated a whopping $100 million to racial initiatives last June. He also gave $7 million to the North Carolina health care system in 2019 and 2020, to open family clinics in Charlotte. To date, 1000 people have already received the coronavirus vaccine at the clinics. It is expected that those who will benefit the most from Jordan’s donation will be those in the low-income bracket.
