Matteo Berrettini pulls out of the 2020 Olympic Games

Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini of Rome, Italy has withdrawn from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 because of a thigh injury according to Reuters. Berrettini suffered the thigh injury while competing in the final grand slam tennis tournament of the year and he could be seen wearing a bandage around his leg when playing the Wimbledon men’s final against Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Djokovic, the world number one, defeated Berrettini, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Djokovic tied Rafael Nadal of Spain and Roger Federer of Switzerland for the most grand slam titles of all-time with 20.

There is no doubt that Berrettini is an integral part go the Italian men’s tennis program. The Wimbledon final was the first grand slam final of Berrettini’s career. Currently ranked eighth in the world, Berrettini is one currently one of nine Italians ranked in the top 100. He is joined by Jannik Sinner (23rd), Lorenzo Sonego (26th), Fabio Fognini (31st), Lorenzo Musetti (61st), Gianluca Mager (75th), Marco Cecchinato (82nd), Andreas Seppi (87th), and Stefano Travaglia (91st). France meanwhile also currently have nine players ranked in the top 100, while the United States and Spain each have 10 players ranked in the top 100.

Italy will currently be represented by Musetti, Sonego and Fognini in men’s singles, as well as Musetti and Sonego in men’s doubles. In women’s singles, Italy will be represented by Sara Errani, Camila Giorgi, and Jasmine Paolini.

Berrettini is one of numerous men’s players to withdraw from the Olympics due to injury. Others included Vasek Pospisil of Canada, Federer, and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.
