Matt McCarty wins the inaugural Black Desert Classic

For the first time, Matt McCarty of Scottsdale, Arizona is a winner on the PGA Tour. On Sunday, he shot a four round score of -23 to beat Stephan Jager of Munich, Germany by three strokes. Jager had a four round score of -20.

McCarty had a first round score of nine-under-par 62, a second round score of three-under-par 68, a third round score of seven-under-par 64, and a fourth round score of four-under-par 67. In a remarkable performance, McCarty had three eagles in winning the tournament. He posted a score of two on the par four fifth hole in round one, a score of three on the par five seventh hole in round three, and a score of two on the par four 14th hole in round four. In McCarty’s eagle in round one, he had a 315 yard tee shot, and then made a 36 foot, three inch putt. In McCarty’s eagle in round four, he had a 297 yard tee shot and then made a putt that was only three feet and seven inches.

This was the first time since 1963 that there has been a PGA tournament in Utah. That year Tommy Jacobs of Denver, Colorado posted a four round score of -12 and beat fellow American Don January of Plainview, Texas by a stroke to win the Utah Open. January was a major champion as he won the 1967 PGA Championship.

The Black Desert Championship was one of two new events on the PGA Tour schedule in 2024. The other was the Myrtle Beach Classic in South Carolina, which was won by Chris Gotterup of Easton, Maryland in May. Gotterup won the Myrtle Beach Classic the same weekend that Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship. However, unlike the Myrtle Beach Classic, there was only one PGA Tour event this past weekend.
