Marlins trade starting pitcher Edward Cabrera to Cubs

There was a trade made between the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins on Wednesday according to Rogers Sportsnet. The Marlins traded right handed starting pitcher Edward Cabrera of Santiago, Dominican Republic to the Cubs for Canadian outfielder Owen Caissie of Burlington, Ontario, middle infielder Cristian Hernandez of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and corner infielder Edgardo De Leon of Azua, Dominican Republic.
The principal player in the deal was clearly Cabrera. He is now expected to join a pitching rotation that includes Matthew Boyd of Bellevue, Washington, Shota Imanaga of Kitakyushu, Japan, Cade Horton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. and American-born Canadian Jameson Taillon of Lakeland, Florida.

Cabrera has spent his entire career with the Marlins. In 2025, Cabrera has a record of eight wins and seven losses with an earned run average of 3.53. In 137 2/3 innings pitched and 26 games, Cabrera has given up 121 hits, 54 home runs, 17 home runs, and 48 walks, to go along with 150 strikeouts, seven quality starts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.23.
In the history of the Marlins, Cabrera tied the franchise record for most strikeouts in a game by a relief pitcher. He accomplished the feat on September 6, 2023 in an 11-4 Marlins win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The other two Marlins relievers with eight strikeouts in a game were Kevin Slowey of Conroe, Texas and George Soriano of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Slowey had eight strikeouts in a 2-1 Marlins win over the New York Mets in a game that went into 20 innings on June 8, 2013. Soriano had eight strikeouts in a 6-1 Marlins loss to the Colorado Rockies on July 21, 2023.
