Markkanen inks 5-year, $238M extension with Utah

Lauri Markkanen has agreed to a five-year, $238 million contract renegotiation and extension with the Utah Jazz, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The 27-year-old originally had one season and $18 million to run on his deal but utilised the team’s cap space to up that amount to $52 million and tack on a four-year, $196 million extension.
On top of that, Markkanen is now unable to be traded until next offseason – a notable development given the number of offers Utah have received for him in recent months.
The one-time All-Star is fresh off a year in which he averaged 23.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg on 63.1 TS% in 55 starts.
He was also one of just eight players to shoot 39% or better on 7+ threes nightly.
The Finland-native was traded to Utah from Cleveland as a part of the Donovan Mitchell deal two years ago and upped his scoring average by double digits en route to a maiden All-Star berth and Most Improved Player nod.
The Jazz have continued their rebuild over the summer adding first round picks Cody Williams and Isaiah Collier with Markkanen’s new commitment a welcomed boost.
