Marin Cilic pulls out of 2023 Wimbledon

According to atptour.com on Wednesday, Marin Cilic of Croatia has withdrawn from Wimbledon which starts Monday because of a knee injury. He suffered the injury at the beginning of the year.
Cilic has not played since withdrawing from his second round match against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands at the 2023 Maharashtra Open in Pune, India. Cilic did win his first round match in India, as he beat Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Over the years, it has been the grand slam tennis tournaments where Cilic has been at his finest. He won the 2014 United States Open, where he beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the final, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Then he reached the Wimbledon final in 2017 where he lost to Roger Federer of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4, and the Australian Open final in 2018, where he lost to Federer again, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Cilic had a good 2021 tennis season. In that year he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in the final of the Stuttgart Open, 7-6, 6-3, and then Taylor Fritz of the United States in the final of the St. Petersburg Open, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Also in 2021, Cilic and men’s doubles partner Ivan Dodig joined forces in an all-Croatian final at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 before losing to the Croatian team of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, 6-4, 3-6, [10-6].
Meanwhile, three more notable men’s players have withdrawn from Wimbledon. They are two-time grand slam semifinalist Karen Khachanov of Russia (2022 United States Open and 2023 Australian Open) because of a stress fracture in his back, two-time United States Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain (2017 and 2020) because of an elbow injury and Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany because of a hip injury.
