Mao Saigo leads after second round of 2025 US Women’s Open

So far in 2025, we have seen the greatness of Japan’s Mao Saigo in major tournaments. The 23-year-old native of Funabashi won the Chevron Championship earlier this year in The Woodlands, Texas, Now after round two of the 2025 United States Women’s Open, Saigo is once again the leader.

Saigo has a 36-hole score of -8 in Erin Hills, Wisconsin, and has a three stroke lead over six other golfers. Saigo had a first round score of two-under-par 70, and a second round score of six-under-par 66.

In round one, Saigo had five birdies and three bogeys. She had birdies on the first, third, 10th, 16th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the fourth, ninth, and 11th holes. In round two, Saigo had seven birdies and one bogey. She birdied the first, second, seventh, 11th, 12th, 16th and 18th holes, and bogeyed the 14th hole.

The six golfers three strokes back are Americans Nelly Korda of Bradenton, Florida, Yealimi Noh of San Francisco, California, and Sarah Schmelzel of Phoenix, Arizona, Hinako Shibuno of Okayama, Japan, Maja Stark of Skurup, Sweden, and A-lim Kim of Seoul, South Korea.  Of the six are three major champions from the past. Korda won the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship in Atlanta, and the 2024 Chevron Championship. Shibuno won the 2019 Women’s British Open in Milton Keynes, and Kim won the 2020 United States Women’s Open in Houston.

On Saturday the golfers will compete in a threesome, rather than as the traditional pair. That is because there was inclement weather on Friday during the second round, and some players had to finish their second round on Saturday morning.
