Madison Keys ineligible to compete at 2025 ATX Open

Madison Keys of Rock Island, Illinois is an Australian Open champion  after her three set win over Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus this past weekend. You would think that by being a major champion for the first time, more opportunities would be made available to Keys.

Well, that is not the case here. By winning the Australian Open, Keys jumped from 14th to seventh in the world. As a result, she was ineligible to compete at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas at the end of February. Huh? How is this remotely possible. In one of the WTA’s dumbest rules, only one player ranked in the top 10 is eligible to compete in a WTA 250 event (not including the defending champion).

Due to the fact that 2024 United States Open finalist Jessica Pegula of Buffalo, New York (who is sixth in the world) is already committed, Keys is no longer eligible. As for the defending champion, it is China’s Yuan Yue, who is currently ranked 54th in the world. In the 2024 ATX Open final, Yue defeated Xiyu Wang of China, in an all-Chinese final, 6-4, 7-6.

The field at the 2024 ATX Open was not particularly strong. The top seed was Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, who was at the time ranked 35th in the world. Kalinina then lost to Wang 6-3, 7-6 in the semifinals. The top seed in 2023 was Magda Linette of Poland, the 2023 Australian Open semifinalist, who was ranked 21st at the time. The bottom line is by excluding elite players from 250 events, it promotes mediocrity, devalues skill set in tournaments, is bad for women’s tennis and fans who come to see players play.
