Luke Donald to remain Ryder Cup captain for Team Europe in 2025

According to Sean Leahy of Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday, Luke Donald of Hemel Hempstead, England will be the Ryder Cup captain for Team Europe in 2025 at Long Island, New York. Donald was the European captain in 2023, and guided the European squad to a 16.5 to 11.5 win over the United States at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy.
Donald is the eighth captain to be in charge of the European or Great Britain squad in consecutive Ryder Cups. He follows Charles Whitcombe of Berrow, England (1935 and 1937), Dan Rees of Font-y-Gary, Wales (1955, 1957, 1959, and 1961), Eric Brown of Edinburgh, Scotland (1969 and 1971), Bernhard Hunt of Atherstone, England (1973 and 1975), John Jacobs of Woodsetts, England (1979 and 1981), Tony Jacklin of Scunthorpe, England (1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989), and Bernard Gallacher of Bathgate, Scotland (1991, 1993 and 1995).
However, what sets Donald apart from the other seven European captains who have been in charge in consecutive Ryder Cups is the fact he is the only captain to win the Ryder Cup in his first attempt. In the 11 Ryder Cups since 2002, Europe has been victorious eight times.
As a golfer, Donald was ranked first in the world for 56 weeks starting in 2011. He won five PGA Tour events in a span of a decade. They were the 2002 Southern Farm Bureau Classic (now the Sanderson Farms Championship) in Jackson, Mississippi, the 2006 Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the 2011 World Golf Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona, the 2011 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Walt Disney World, Florida, and the 2012 Transitions Championship (now the Valspar Championship) in Palm Harbor, Florida.
