Luka Doncic shines as Mavericks beat Nets 125-120

Luka Doncic of Ljubljana, Slovenia might not have reached 50 points on Friday, but performed admirably in a narrow 125-120 win over the Brooklyn Nets. In the victory, he scored 49 points, and had 10 rebounds and seven assists. As a result, it was the 15th time in Doncic’s career, he had 40 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The only player to have a 40/10/5 statistical line more is Oscar Robertson of Charlotte, Tennessee, who achieved the mark 16 times.

Doncic has now scored 82 points in his first two games this season. On Wednesday, in the Mavericks’s season opener, he scored 33 points in a 126-119 win over the San Antonio Spurs. This game was significant because it was the first game ever for first overall pick Victor Wembanyama of Le Chesnay, France, who had 15 points. A lot is expected from Wembanyama because of his remarkable height at seven feet and four inches. However, it was Doncic that delivered with the most impressive statistical line, and showed he is the better all-around player at 24 years of age. In addition to his 33 points, Doncic had the triple double with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. It was the 57th triple double of his career.

In order for Dallas to be effective this season, they will also need strong production from Kyrie Irving of Melbourne, Australia to be effective. Irving had 22 points against the Spurs and 17 points against the Nets. He is not the focal point of the Dallas offense, but needs to lead the Mavericks’s supporting cast if they hope to win their first NBA Finals since 2011.
