Ludvig Aberg wins 2023 RSM Championship

It has been quite the golf season for Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year old from Eslov, helped Europe win the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy. During this elite team play event, Aberg made Ryder Cup history by becoming the first golfer ever to compete at the Ryder Cup before ever competing at a major. He has also seen his Official Golf World Ranking rise from 3064th in the world to 32nd. That is a jump in the rankings by a remarkable 3032 spots. A reason for Aberg’s recent rise is because he won his first PGA tournament on Sunday.

At the RSM Classic at the Sea Island Seaside Course in Saint Simon’s Island. Georgia, Aberg defeated Canadian Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario, by four strokes after shooting a four-round score of -29. In the process, he won a sparkling $1.5 million. Aberg had a first round score of three-under-par 67, second round score of six-under-par 64, third round score of nine-under-par 61, and a fourth round score of nine-under-par 61 again. In the first round, Aberg eagled the par five eighth hole. In the second round, he had six birdies compared to zero bogeys. In the third round, Aberg had hid second eagle of the tournament, as he was two-under-par on the par five 15th hole. Then in the fourth round, Aberg had 10 birdies and one bogey.

In an interesting note, Hughes’s score of -25 was the second best tournament score this season for a golfer not to win a tournament. The only golfer who had a better score was Davis Thompson of Auburn, Alabama, who finished second at -26 at the 2023 American Express Championship.
