LPGA readjusts their return to play schedule

According to CBC Sports, the LPGA has decided to readjust their schedule when they return to play in July. The season is now scheduled to return with the LPGA Drive On Championship from July 31 to August 2, at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

The LPGA Drive On Championship is a new event, and will only be 54 holes, instead of 72 holes. In the past, the Inverness Club has hosted six majors in men’s golf. They have been the 1920 U.S. Open, 1931 U.S. Open, 1957 U.S. Open, 1979 U.S. Open, 1986 PGA Championship and 1993 PGA Championship. Inverness Club is also set to host the 2021 Solheim Cup, which is a women’s team competition between the best players from the United States versus the best players from Europe.

The 2020 LPGA season was initially set to return on July 23 with the Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio. However, that event has now been moved to August 6-9. The reason for the rescheduling is because the Evian Masters, which was initially scheduled for August 6, has now been cancelled because of coronavirus.

After the women’s best golfers are in Ohio for back-to-back weekends, they will then be scheduled to travel to Scotland. At this time, the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open is set to go from August 13-16, and then the AIG Women’s British Open (the first major on the LPGA Tour in 2020) is to go from August 20-23 at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

The last LPGA event on the calendar took place on February 16. The event was the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open from Seaton, Australia, and was won by seven-time major champion Inbee Park of Seoul, South Korea.
