LPGA puts restrictions on transgender golfers

According to George Ramsay of CNN on Wednesday, the LPGA made a significant decision when it came to the participation of transgender golfers. In the future, golfers attempting to participate on the LPGA Tour will be allowed to compete if they were female by birth or if they transitioned to female before puberty. Golfers who transitioned to female after puberty will no longer be allowed to participate on the LPGA Tour.

The decision comes after Hailey Davidson of Scotland came very close to qualifying on the LPGA Tour within the last year. Davidson transitioned from male to female in 2015 at the age of 23.

The LPGA made their executive decision the same week that Mollie Marcoux Samaan announced her plans to resign as commissioner. Marcoux Samaan was initially named LPGA commissioner on May 25, 2021. Meanwhile, Liz Moore of Daytona Beach, Florida is the interim commissioner. Moore had been the chief legal officer and corporate secretary, as well as the chief legal and technology officer of the LPGA over the last decade.

It will now be interesting if Marcoux Samaan stays in professional sports. One must reminder that she has an ice hockey and football (soccer) background at Princeton University from 1987 to 1991. Over the last two years we have seen the emergence of the Professional Women’s Hockey League in North America, and in the not too distant future we will see the debut of the six-team Northern Super League in Canada (a Canadian women’s professional soccer league). At the present time, there is expected to be several administrative possibilities opening up across Canada in the women’s soccer industry.
