Louis Oosthuizen leads after the first round of the 2021 British Open

Louis Oosthuizen of Mossel Bay, South Africa, is the leader after the first round of the 2021 British Open from Royal St. George’s Golf Course in Sandwich, England. Oosthuizen, who won the British Open in 2010, has finished second at the 2021 PGA Championship and the 2021 United States Open already this year. He finished behind Phil Mickelson at the PGA Championship and Jon Rahm at the United States Open.
Oosthuizen posted an opening-round score of 64 on Thursday when he shot a -6. He had six birdies and zero bogeys, as he birdied the eighth, ninth, tenth, 13th, 14th, and 16th holes. Oosthuizen is -6 despite the fact he parred the first seven holes on the golf course.
Oosthuizen has a whole bunch of players in striking distance. Eighteen golfers are within three strokes of the lead. Two Americans– the 2017 British Open champion Jordan Spieth and Brian Harman are at -5. Americans Webb Simpson and Stewart Cink (the 2009 British Open champion), Canada’s MacKenzie Hughes, France’s Benjamin Hebert, and South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli are at -4. Meanwhile, five Englishmen are among the five tied at -3. They are Danny Willett, Andy Sullivan, Jack Senior, Justin Rose, and Tommy Fleetwood. They are tied for ninth place alongside Americans Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa, Germany’s Marcel Siem, South Korea’s Byeong Hun An, and South Africa’s Justin Harding.

Senior and Rose had similar rounds. They each had three birdies and zero bogeys. It will be interesting to see how Rose will do from a mental perspective this week as he will not be competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. Due to the fact he was not one of the top two British golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings, Rose was not chosen for the British Olympic team despite being the reigning Olympic champion.
