Lorie Kane inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame

In an announcement made on Wednesday, Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, one of Canada’s best female golfers of all-time, is being inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, Alberta, in 2020. Kane is a four-time champion on the LPGA Tour. She won thrice in 2000 and once in 2001.
Kane’s first victory came at the Michelob Light Classic in St. Louis, Missouri on August 6, 2000. She defeated Kristi Albers of the United States by three strokes after a four-round score of -11. Kane ended a dynasty by Annika Sorenstam at the tournament. Sorenstam, who won the Michelob Light Classic four times overall, won three consecutive tournaments from 1997 to 1999.
Kane’s second LPGA victory came at the New Albany Golf Classic on October 1, 2000. Here, Kane also had a four-round score of -11 and defeated Mi-Hyun Kim of South Korea in a playoff. Just like the Michelob Light Classic, Sorenstam won the New Albany Classic in 1999.
Then a month later at the Mizuno Classic in Otsu, Japan on November 5, 2000, Kane defeated Sophie Gustafson of Sweden in a playoff by recording a four-round score of -12. Ironically, a Swede had won this tournament as well in 1999 as Maria Hjorth was victorious.
Kane’s fourth and final LPGA victory came on February 10, 2001, at the LPGA Takefuji Classic from the Kona Country Club in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Kane defeated Sorenstam by two strokes to win the title.
What one might not know about Kane is the fact she has won five Legends Tour titles from 2011 to 2018. In professional golf, there is a large discrepancy in media coverage between the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour. Unfortunately, there is even a greater discrepancy in media coverage between the Champions Tour (men’s seniors’ tour in golf) and the Legends Tour (women’s seniors’ tour in golf).
