Looking back at Josh Allen’s fantasy record breaking performance

It is not often on The Sporting Base that we highlight an athlete’s performance in a losing contest. What Josh Allen accomplished for the Buffalo Bills was magnificent and masterful even though Buffalo lost 44-42 to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

The fact we described this game as a shootout is an understatement. It was the first time ever that both teams scored 40 points or more and did not commit a single turnover. The Rams won because you could make the argument that they had a better degree of diversified offense. The Bills might have relied a little bit too much on Allen, and as a result they lost by two points.

Allen finished the game by completing 22 passes in 37 attempts for 342 passing yards and three touchdowns. He was equally as impactful on the ground as he had 10 rushes for 82 rushing yards and three touchdowns. In the process, Allen generated a record 51.88 fantasy points. That is for standard fantasy leagues where quarterbacks only have four points for a touchdown pass. In the majority of fantasy football pools I have been in the last two decades, quarterbacks get six points. So, therefore Allen received 57.88 points.

The previous record for most points in a game by a fantasy quarterback was Michael Vick of Newport News, Virginia. He had 49.32 fantasy points for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 59-28 win over the Washington Redskins on November 15, 2010. Vick had 333 yards passing, four touchdown passes, 80 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns in the 31-point blowout win for the Eagles 14 years ago.
