Long odds Roosters will let Teddy get to November deadline

The Sydney Roosters are already most of the way through preparing an extension package for tricolours captain James Tedesco, with the Bondi powerhouse happy to bend to some of the fullback’s demands to make sure he’s all tied up by November.

Teddy’s been speaking publicly for some time now about how he wants to stay with the Roosters and see out his glittering NRL career in Bondi and the club feels very similarly.

Everything comes down to the usual NRL market deadline, November 1. Tedesco, who’s earning around $1.1 million a season right now, is contracted through to the end of next year, which means he can speak to all 17 NRL clubs—many of whom are interested—from the first day in November and sign any deals that would start in 2026 and beyond.

That’s the date the Roosters are now preparing to beat, with Trent Robinson and his Bondi negotiators very aware that Tedesco could command huge value out on the open market even as he prepares to celebrate his 32nd birthday in early January.

It’s very likely this rush will soon translate into a one-year offer for the Sydney skipper.

Nothing’s been put together formally for Tedesco yet, of course, with the Roosters’ preliminary final against title favourites the Storm on Friday the club’s whole focus, but once that’s done (win or lose) things will spring into motion.

The Sporting Base would be shocked if there’s anything more than 12 months topped up for Tedesco though, especially considering that would take him through to nearly 34 years old. The Kangaroos captain has looked incredible through much of 2024, but it was less than a year ago that many were wondering when he’d walk away from the game.

Pay-wise, veteran journalist Buzz Rothfield has reported Teddy’s likely looking at “probably $900,000” for 2026, which would mark a $200,000 drop from what he’s earning next season.
