There are frequently upsets in tennis, but what we saw on Monday was an upset for the ages and one of the biggest upsets in the history of women’s tennis. Entering the fourth round match between world number three and 2024 United States Open finalist Jessica Pegula of Buffalo, New York, and world number 361 Lois Boisson of Dijon, France, Pegula was a -649 and Boisson was a +425 according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
However, it was Boisson that came through 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win. Boisson returned Pegula’s serve extremely well as Pegula did not have a single ace, while Boisson had three aces. Another key statistic in the match were winners as Boisson had 43, while Pegula had 30.
To put Boisson’s upset win into perspective, she is the lowest ranked quarterfinalist at a major in eight years. Kaia Kanepi of Estonia was ranked 418th in the world when she made the quarterfinals of the 2017 United States Open. Boisson was also making her grand slam tennis debut at Roland Garros.
Boisson received entry into the tournament as a French wildcard. The 22-year-old also beat the 24th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round. Mertens is a grand slam semifinalist as she made the final four of the 2018 Australian Open.
Next up for Boisson in the quarterfinals is Mirra Andreeva of Russia. The other three women’s quarterfinals have Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus vs. Qinwen Zheng of China, Iga Swiatek of Poland versus Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, and the all-American matchup of Coco Gauff versus Madison Keys. Meanwhile on the men’s side, the quarterfinals are Carlos Alcaraz of Spain versus Tommy Paul of the United States, Jannik Sinner of Italy versus Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy versus Frances Tiafoe of the United States and Novak Djokovic of Serbia versus Alexander Zverev of Germany.
