The second round of Wimbledon continued on Thursday with two significant upsets that went the distance. Liam Broady of Stockport, England gave his home nation a significant amount of joy with an impressive win over world number four Casper Ruud of Norway, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, while Sweden’s Mikael Ymer beat the ninth seed, Taylor Fritz of the United States, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

In Broady’s win over Ruud, it became perfectly obvious that Ruud seems significantly more comfortable on clay than grass. Ruud’s clay court resume includes reaching the final of the last two French Opens, and clay court tournament wins in Argentina, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria and Portugal. However, Ruud’s grass court record is only at five wins and nine losses compared to a record of 212 wins and 100 losses on clay. In Broady’s win over Ruud, two key statistics were double faults and winners. Ruud had eight double faults compared to five for Broady, and Broady had 56 winners compared to 42 for Ruud. Broady will next play the 26th seed and 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov of Canada in round three.

In Ymer’s win over Fritz, it was an impressive comeback for the 59th ranked player of the world. It was the first time in Ymer’s career he came back from a two games to none deficit to win a match. Even though Fritz won more total points than Ymer in the entire match, Ymer was the better player in the fifth and deciding set. He broke Fritz twice on two break point opportunities, and had 14 winners compared to five for Fritz. Ymer will next play Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia in round three on Friday.
