Lexi Thompson to compete at PGA event in Las Vegas

According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, LPGA star Lexi Thompson of Coral Springs, Florida is set to compete against men on the PGA Tour at the 2023 Shiners Children’s Open, which will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 12-15. Thompson will become the seventh woman to compete against men in the history of men’s professional golf.

Thompson is 28 years old, and is a major champion. She was victorious at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship where she posted a four-round score of -14 in Rancho Mirage, California. Thompson beat Michelle Wie of Honolulu, Hawaii by three strokes.

Ironically, Wie is one of the seven female golfers to compete on the PGA Tour. She competed eight times on the PGA Tour from 2004 to 2008. Other women’s golfers who have competed on the PGA Tour are Babe Didrikson Zaharias of Port Arthur, Texas, Shirley Spork of Detroit, Michigan, Annika Sorenstam of Bro, Sweden, Suzy Whaley of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Brittany Lincicome of St. Petersburg, Florida. Of this group, Didrikson Zaharias is the only golfer to make the cut. In 1945, she made the cut at the Los Angeles Open and Tucson Open.

Lincicome meanwhile is the last female golfer to compete in a PGA event as she competed at the 2018 Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Lincicome actually shot under par in the second round as she shot a -1. She became the second female golfer to shoot under par in a round for a PGA event as Wie had a round of -2 at the 2004 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Thompson is currently 25th in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. She has won 11 times on the LPGA Tour but has not been victorious since 2019.
