Latrell ordered to face Bunnies board to argue for his future

Bonafide NRL superstar Latrell Mitchell could soon be without a club to play for, with the South Sydney fullback now preparing to face the Rabbitohs board to argue why he shouldn’t have his contract torn up.
Word coming out of Redfern is the Souths bosses have reached the end of their patience with Mitchell, who this week made headlines after an image appeared to show him with white powder.

The 27-year-old was slapped with a breach notice from the NRL for the photo, which was first shared by The Daily Telegraph. He will also be fined and likely suspended. This, alongside other flashpoints in 2024 like his suspension for elbowing Shaun Johnson and repetitive swearing in a Triple M interview, have South Sydney’s board grinding its teeth.
The argument from the club will be that Mitchell’s $1 million contract isn’t worth the trouble.
That has only been compounded by the time he has actually spent playing this season. As the Rabbitohs struggled to tear themselves away from the wooden spoon battle, Latrell spent 17 games injured and appeared in just 11 of the team’s two dozen matches.
Whether Latrell wants to argue the other way remains to be seen, with The Sporting Base not yet hearing anything from that side; there’s every possibility the State of Origin powerhouse may feel similarly to his club.
All that being said, The Sporting Base would be absolutely shocked if Mitchell and the Rabbitohs actually part ways. Wayne Bennett considers Latrell among the very best to have played the game and there’s no doubt he’s already speaking to powerbrokers at Redfern to defend the fullback and talk about his plans for the star.
Elsewhere, NRL clubs the comp over are quietly paying attention. The St George Illawarra Dragons in particular are still eager to land a mega signing and Mitchell would fit that perfectly. Other clubs that could use the Origin rep are endless, with the Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers also among possible suitors.

Right now though, Latrell is still signed to the South Sydney Rabbitohs through to 2027 and is being paid over $1,000,000 a year. It’s long odds he’d walk away from that without a tough battle.
