Redfern royalty: Latrell has signed franchise contract with Souths
3 years ago - Sportingbase
Latrell Mitchell is set to stay in the cardinal red and myrtle green as the club’s main man until at least the end of the 2027 NRL season, with sources at the club confirming their star fullback has put pen to paper up a huge extension.
The new deal will take Mitchell’s stay at Souths out to at least eight campaigns.

It is understood coach Jason Demetrio’s push for Latrell to express himself on the footy field and really play with freedom in the number one jumper was a deciding factor for the 25-year-old.
The hope within the South Sydney ranks is that Mitchell can even see out his career at Redfern and provide a stability at the back throughout the 2020s. His bumper extension—originally reported by The Sporting Base in September—will see him earn up to $1,400,000 a season by the end of the five new years.
Interest from Wayne Bennett and the Dolphins dragged the Kangaroos star’s asking price a little higher than Souths wanted, but they’re happy to pay the price for an out-and-out franchise player.

The Taree junior has played 48 games for the Bunnies since joining in 2020. The State of Origin game-breaker originally played for Souths’ arch-rivals, the Roosters, for 97 games from 2016 to 2019. He’s already played seven times each for the Blues and Australia.
The Rabbitohs haven’t ran lower than top four since Mitchell’s swap.
Elsewhere in the club, Damian Cook and Cody Walker are expected to follow Latrell’s example soon. Whispers in the club are the Souths hooker and five-eighth are both close to new deals that will stretch their Redfern stays out to 2025. Right now, without a contract signed, both stars will walk out the door after the 2023 season.
Halfback Lachlan Ilias, meanwhile, extended his deal to 2025 some weeks ago.
