Late season push might be too late for the Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are arguably playing their best football of the season. After their 41-25 win over the Detroit Lions on American Thanksgiving on Thursday, the Texans have a mini-two game winning streak. However, they are only at four wins and seven losses, and even though they would be in first place if they were in the NFC East, Houston only has the 12th best record in the AFC.
There is no doubt the Texans have momentum. Their win on Thursday was their second in five days, as they previously beat the New England Patriots 27-20 on Sunday. However, Houston remains three games below the .500 mark, and are only ahead of the four basement teams in the AFC– the 3-7 Los Angeles Chargers, the 2-7-1 Cincinnati Bengals, the 1-9 Jacksonville Jaguars, and the 0-10 New York Jets.
On Thursday, the Texans received notable performances from three of their star players–quarterback DeShaun Watson of Gainesville, Georgia, wide receiver Will Fuller V of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and defensive end J.J. Watt of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Watson completed 17 of 25 passes for 318 yards, and four touchdowns. He had great chemistry with Fuller, as he caught six passes for 171 yards, and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Watt had his second career interception for a touchdown. The pick six for the three-time National Football League Defensive Player of the Year winner, put the Texans on the scoreboard after the Lions went up 7-0.

With five games left in the 2020 NFL regular season, Houston has two games with the Indianapolis Colts, and one each with the Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Chicago Bears left on their schedule. Even if Houston wins their remaining five games and improves to a record of nine wins and seven losses, it is doubtful that they will be among the top seven and get into the postseason, in the talented AFC.
