Knights use centre spot offer to pry Schiller away from the Raiders

Newcastle has found a young outside back to plug into its attack, with sizzling Canberra Raiders tryscorer James Schiller set to join the Knights on a three-year deal from next year.

The move, which was first reported by the Daily Telegraph, was bedded in after Adam O’Brien offered Schiller his preferred centre spot.

There’s a good chance 22-year-old Schiller will immediately replace veteran Dane Gagai, who is already 33 years old and starring down the barrel of his last contract in the NRL. The Sporting Base can report Newcastle will offer their experienced centre a 12-month extension, but he’s searching for a multi-year deal.

Schiller has been red-hot for the Raiders so far in 2024, having already scored five tries in just four games while playing off the wing. Canberra now sit in third place heading into round 7.

The Raiders have not announced anything yet, but the Telegraph reported on Wednesday that everything is bedded away and Schiller told his teammates earlier this week.
