Kevin Anderson makes a return to tennis

According to the ATP Tour on Tuesday, two-time grand slam tennis finalist Kevin Anderson of Johannesburg, South Africa is officially coming out of retirement. Anderson’s first tournament will be on Tuesday where he will face Gabriel Diallo of Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the first round of the Infosys Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Rhode Island.
Anderson initially announced his retirement on May 3, 2022 at the age of 35. At the time, he was dealing with multiple injuries which limited his ability to play high quality tennis. Anderson reportedly feels significantly better now and received a wildcard for the first tennis tournament on the calendar after Wimbledon.
Anderson’s first Grand Slam final of his career came at the 2017 United States Open. There he lost 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to Rafael Nadal of Manacor, Spain. Then Anderson lost in the final of Wimbledon in 2018 to Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
It is interesting Anderson is making a comeback to tennis at the same tournament where he won his last ATP event. In 2021, Anderson defeated Jenson Brooksby of the United States in the final, 7-6, 6-4.
Anderson’s other six ATP titles came at the the 2011 South Africa Tennis Open (beat Somdev Devvarman of India in the final, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2), the 2012 Delray Beach Open (beat Marinko Matosevic of Australia in the final, 6-4, 7-6), the 2015 Winston-Salem Open (beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France in the final, 6-4, 7-5), the 2018 New York Open (beat Querrey in the final, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6), the 2018 Vienna Open (beat Key Nishikori of Japan in the final, 6-3, 7-6), and the 2019 Maharashtra Open in India (beat Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the final, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6). Of the seven ATP titles, six were at the 250 level. The Vienna Open was at the 500 level.
