Jordan Thompson wins at Wimbledon after losing first two sets

For the third time in Jordan Thompson’s career, he came back from a two games to love deficit to win a grand slam match. On Monday in the first round of Wimbledon, Thompson of Sydney, defeated American Brandon Nakashima of San Diego, California, 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.
A major reason for Thompson’s success on Monday came down to the serve. Thompson had 16 aces compared to 10 for Nakashima. Thompson was also very effective at the net as he won 42 points compared to 26 for Nakashima.
Thompson’s first time he came back from a two sets to love deficit to win the match was in the first round of the 2017 Australian Open. Thompson beat Joao Sousa of Portugal, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. Thompson’s second time he came back from a two sets to love deficit to win the match was in the first round of the 2022 United States Open. There he beat Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, 2-6, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
Thompson will now have to face world number two and defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the second round. This will be their first meeting head to head.
A second Australian won on Monday in the first round. Aleksandar Vukic of Sydney defeated Daniel Altmaier of Germany, 6-3, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. This was a minor upset as Vukic is 87th in the world and Altmaier is 66th. Vukic had 11 aces and only 26 unforced errors. Vukic had only six aces and 39 unforced errors.
Two seeded men were knocked out in round one. The 11th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada was beaten by Michael Mmoh of the United States, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Meanwhile, the 24th seed Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan was beaten by Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile in other Australian tennis news, Nick Kyrgios pulled out because of a wrist injury. He has only had one match in 2023 and that came in Stuttgart.
