Joaquin Niemann’s missed cut at the US Open unexpected

We are nearing the halfway point of the third major of the year in men’s golf. There are some significant names who are going to miss the cut. They include Ludvig Aberg, 2023 United States Open champion Wyndham Clark, 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover, Patrick Cantlay, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson, 2022 British Open champion Cameron Smith, Tommy Fleetwood, two-time US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, 2019 US Open champion Gary Woodland, two-time major champion Dustin Johnson, Sepp Straka, 2013 United States Open champion Justin Rose, two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, and 2019 British Open champion Shane Lowry.

However, there was another big surprise who did not make the cut. That was Chile’s Joaquin Niemann, who was ten-over-par and is currently tied for 91st. Niemann will definitely be missing the cut, which will be at either +6 or +7. The second round of the 2025 United States Open at Oakmont is yet to be complete because of inclement weather in the region Friday evening in Pittsburgh.

The reason why it is surprising that Niemann did not make the cut is because he has been excellent on the LIV Tour this year. He has won four times already in 2025 (in Adelaide, Singapore, Mexico City, and Virginia). Niemann has actually won more golf tournaments this year than Scottie Scheffler.

With the exceptional ball striking abilities Niemann has showcased on a regular basis in 2025, you just expected to see greatness from this LIV member at Oakmont. That was not the case. One now needs to question if LIV participation is the best option for golfers as they prepare for major championships. Remember LIV events are only three days, and players are guaranteed money just for participating.
