Jets wide receiver Corey Davis to take a leave of absence from NFL

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN on Wednesday, New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis of Chicago, Illinois is taking a leave of absence from the National Football League. Davis’s long term status is in question at this time. Cimini is reporting that Davis is “stepping away,” while Dan Girolamo of The Sports Daily, has reported that Davis is “retiring.” It should be noted that Davis did not officially use the word “retirement” in his Instagram post.

Davis spent four seasons with the Tennessee Titans from 2017 to 2020, and the last two seasons with the New York Jets. In 2022, he had 32 catches for 536 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Davis had a 66-yard touchdown catch from Joe Flacco on September 18 in a 31-30 Jets win over the Cleveland Browns, and then a five-yard touchdown catch from Zach Wilson on October 2 in a 24-20 Jets win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 2. In Davis’s career, he has 273 catches for 3879 receiving yards and 17 touchdown catches.

The Jets are stacked at wide receiver heading into the season. Among the new wideouts are Allen Lazard of Des Moines, Iowa, Mecole Hardman of Bowman, Georgia, and Randall Cobb of Maryville, Tennessee. Lazard and Cobb played last year for the Green Bay Packers, while Hardman won a Super Bowl last year for Kansas City.

The AFC East enters the season very intriguing. The Bills appear to be the best, however the Jets will be greatly improved. The Dolphins have an explosive passing game and the Patriots have an excellent defense.
