Jets trade wide receiver Denzel Mims to Lions

According to John Maakaron of Sports Illustrated on Thursday, the New York Jets have traded wide receiver Denzel Mims of Daingerfield, Texas to the Detroit Lions. The other components of the deal will depend on whether or not Mims makes the Lions’s 53 man roster. If Mims is successful, the Lions will trade a sixth round draft pick in the 2025 National Football League Draft to the Jets, and the Jets will trade a seventh round draft pick in the 2025 National Football League Draft to the Lions.

Mims has spent the last three seasons with the Jets. In 2022, he had 11 catches for 186 yards in 10 games. During 30 NFL games since 2020, Mims has 42 catches for 676 receiving yards.

This past season Mims had a career-high in receiving yards with 76. It came in a 22-17 Jets loss to the New England Patriots on October 30.

Mims was the Jets’s second round pick, 59th overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Baylor University. With their first pick in 2020, the Jets selected offensive tackle Mekhi Beckton of Highland Springs, Virginia out of the University of Louisville.

It is expected that Mims will be a backup wide receiver. He is expected to behind Amon-Ra St. Brown of Anaheim Hills, California, Marvin Jones Jr. of Los Angeles, California and Josh Reynolds of San Antonio, Texas on the Lions depth chart.

One reason why Mims was traded by the Jets appears to be because New York has changed their wide receiver group with the acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Among the new Jets wide receivers are Mecole Hardman Jr. of Bowman, Georgia, Allen Lazard of Des Moines, Iowa, and Randal Cobb of Maryville, Tennessee.
