Jets sign running back Dalvin Cook

The retransformation of the New York Jets is continuing. On Monday, the veteran running back from Miami, Florida signed a one-year contract that could see him earn up to $8.6 million according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Cook joins a list of NFL free agents that include quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and wide receivers Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb.

The Jets become the second National Football League franchise Cook has played for as he previously played the last six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. In 17 games for the Vikings in 2022, he had 264 rushes for 1173 rushing yards and eight touchdown rushes. Cook also had 39 catches for 295 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The touchdown catches came in Vikings wins.

The first touchdown catch came in a 20-17 Vikings win over the Washington Commanders on November 6. The major score occurred with seven minutes and 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and was a 12-yard touchdown from quarterback Kirk Cousins which tied the game at 17 at the time. The second catch came in the thrilling 39-36 Vikings win over the Indianapolis Colts on December 17. In the biggest comeback in NFL history, the Vikings were once trailing 33-0. Cook’s touchdown catch from Cousins was for 64 yards and tied the game at 36 with two minutes and 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

In New York, Cook will be in a time share with running back Breece Hall of Omaha, Nebraska. Last season, Hall was electrifying for the Jets as he had 463 rushing yards in only seven games before a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury ended his season prematurely.
