Jennifer Brady and Paula Badosa pull out of French Open with injuries

With the 2023 French Open set to start on Sunday from Roland Garros, two notable names in the women’s draw has withdrawn. According to Samuel Gill of tennisuptodate.com, Paula Badosa of Spain has a stress fracture in her vertebrae, and is scheduled to miss two to three months. Meanwhile, Jennifer Brady of the United States has pulled out because of a foot injury according to Christopher Clarey of the New York Times.

Badosa last played the Italian Open. She reached the quarterfinals before losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

Badosa has been ranked as high as second in the world. She achieved that ranking in April of last year. Badosa is currently 29th in the WTA World Rankings.

The 2021 French Open was Badosa’s best grand slam result. There she reached the quarterfinals before losing 7-5, 4-6, 8-6 to Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia. Badosa’s most notable win at the 2021 French Open was a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over 2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova of Czech Republic. Badosa’s three WTA titles came at the 2021 Belgrade Open, 2021 Indian Wells, and 2022 Sydney International.

Brady meanwhile has not played a WTA match since the 2021 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati because of a knee injury. Ironically, she also played Ostapenko in her last match before being on the sidelines. Brady’s most significant tennis achievement of her career was reaching the 2021 Australian Open Final. There she lost 6-4, 6-3 to Naomi Osaka of Japan. Brady has one career WTA title. That came at the 2020 Lexington Open in Kentucky, where she beat Jil Teichmann of Switzerland in the final, 6-3, 6-4.
