Jason Witten retires for the second time

We have heard this story before. On May 3, 2018, Jason Witten retired from the Dallas Cowboys and joined ESPN’s broadcast team as an analyst for the 2018 Monday Night Football coverage. But wait. Witten was only with MNF for a single year. He returned to the Cowboys in 2019, where he played a year, before joining the Las Vegas Raiders on a one-year contract for the 2020 National Football League season. On Wednesday, according to Reuters Media, Witten announced his second retirement from the NFL at the age of 38.

Witten is one of the best tight ends in National Football League history. The native of Washington, D.C. is ranked third all-time among tight ends, behind Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. In 271 NFL games with the Cowboys and Raiders, Witten had 1228 catches for 13046 yards and 74 touchdowns.

Witten’s 1228 catches and 13046 receiving yards, are the second most all-time among tight ends in NFL history. Only Gonzalez, who had 1325 catches and 15127 receiving yards, had more than Witten.

Witten’s finest NFL season came with the Cowboys in 2007 when he had a career-high 1145 yards. A Pro-Bowler 11 times (2004-2010, 2012-2014, and 2017), Witten was a NFL First-Team All-Pro in 2007 and 2010. In 2010, Witten had a career-high nine touchdown catches to go along with 1002 receiving yards.

Throughout most of his NFL career, Witten had perfect timing with former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. When Romo retired, he was unable to find the same kind of chemistry with Dak Prescott at the Cowboys helm.

In his final season with the Raiders, Witten was the backup tight end in Las Vegas behind Darren Waller. He had 13 catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
