Jarome Luai: ‘No one is going to do this again’

For the first time in the NRL era—and, incredibly, for the first time in St George’s eleven straight—a club has won four premierships in a row. It’s an achievement departing club junior Jarome Luai believes will never be beaten.

“No one is going to do this again,” the 130-game Panther, who just crowned his “last ride” with a fourth ring, said after the siren sounded at Homebush on Sunday.

While Luai then admitted “history doesn’t matter” to him right now as he soaks in the victory, it’s hard not to immediately crack open the history books and write the latest chapter in red, green, and black. It was nigh unthinkable that any team in the salary cap era could win three. Even as he soaks it in, Luai knows four is beyond imagination.

“Just to win one grand final is so special,” Luai said.

“This group of guys, no-one works harder than these boys and we got what we deserved.”

Many in the NRL world have already agreed with Luai too. Among them is the arguable GOAT of rugby league, Andrew Johns, who could only beam in adulation.

“No one will ever do what the St George team in the ‘50s and ‘60s did,” the eighth Immortal said while commentating the fourth-straight Panthers grand final victory on Channel 9. “But I don’t think we will ever see this again in the modern NRL era with a salary cap and how hard it is to keep a squad together with success. Four in a row!”

In the post-match interviews, Nathan Cleary admitted it was all “unbelievable.”

“Obviously that Dragons team back then was an outstanding team and achieved an amazing feat, but in terms of the NRL era, it’s pretty crazy,” he said.

“Mind-blowing we’ve been able to do it. We have lost great players along this journey and we’re just going to lose more next year but just keep finding a way, people just step up. It’s special to have that culture and just bring people in and just do their job and even exceed it.”

The last time any rugby league side won four in a row was St George between 1956 and 1966. South Sydney made five finals through 1967 to 1971, though they only won two straight twice in that five.
