For the third time in his career, Jannik Sinner of Innichen, Italy is a major champion. After winning the 2024 Australian Open and 2024 United States Open, Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the 2025 Australian Open men’s final.

It was quite a straightforward victory for Sinner, as Zverev simply could not read Sinner’s serve. Zverev did not have one break point opportunity in the match, while Sinner had 12 chances, of which he converted twice.

Zverev meanwhile, seemed quite disgruntled after losing the second set in a tie-break. Zverev slammed his racquet repeatedly after losing 7-4.

You simply did not see the frustration from Sinner during the match. The Italian was quite calm and collected, and took control early in the third set with a service break.

This was the third time Sinner has beaten Zverev. He also won in the fourth round of the 2020 French Open (6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3), and the semifinals of Cincinnati in 2024 (7-6, 5-7, 7-6). Of the seven matches Sinner and Zverev have had against each other in their careers (of which Zverev has won four), this was by far and away the most complete match Sinner has played.

This spring, Sinner will be back in the sports spotlight. According to Jonathan Jurejko of the British Broadcasting Corporation, the Court of Arbitration for Sport will make a determination on Sinner’s immediate future playing tennis at the ATP level. A year ago at Indian Wells, Sinner tested positive for clostebol, but was never suspended. His penalty was losing points from making the semifinals. The World Anti-Doping Agency has since appealed the ruling and believes Sinner should be suspended between one to two years.
