Jannik Sinner of San Candido, Italy has won the 2024 Australian Open. On Sunday in Melbourne, he defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. This was the second time in Medvedev’s career he was up two sets to love in the Australian Open final and lost. In 2022, he lost 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 to Rafael Nadal of Spain.

For Sinner, the fourth seed at the Australian Open, this was his first grand slam singles title. Sinner also becomes the third Italian man to ever win a grand slam singles title in men’s tennis. Nicola Pietrangeli of Rome won the 1959 and 1960 French Open, and in 1976, Adriano Panatta of Rome won the French Open. In the 1959 French Open final, Pietrangeli beat Ian Vermaak of South Africa, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. In the 1960 French Open final, Pietrangeli beat Luis Ayala of Chile, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In the 1976 French Open final, Panatta beat American Harold Solomon 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

In the 2024 Australian Open men’s final, the match lasted three hours and 44 minutes. Sinner was the slightly better server as he had 14 aces compared to 11 for Medvedev. The Italian also had fewer mistakes, as he had 49 errors compared to 57 for Medvedev.

There was a belief that Medvedev used up a significant amount of energy in the early stages in the match, and was unable to play at the same level in the latter stages. Meanwhile, it appeared that Medvedev was dealing with a minor foot problem, as he needed to call the trainer. Finally, Sinner was the clear fan favourite, and the fact that the crowd was not on Medvedev’s side seemed to agitate him a bit.
